Tom McGee - Founder - X-Heat & Zebco

Each month we plan to chat with industry professionals about design and innovation. Want to take part?

For this Interview, we’ve are thrilled to get to chat to one of our customers, Tom McGee and the amazing Innovations within Heating, Catalysts and Net Zero!

Tell us a bit about you and what drives you

As the founder of X-Heat Ltd, I’m driven by a deep passion for innovation. My journey has always been about challenging the status quo, and I saw an incredible opportunity to transform the heating industry with catalytic technology. What drives me is the pursuit of solutions that not only meet today’s energy needs but also align with a greener, more sustainable future.

Tell us about your Innovation / Technology

At X-Heat Ltd, we’ve revolutionized heating with our innovative catalytic technology, offering a cleaner, more efficient alternative to traditional systems. Using precious metal catalysts, our technology oxidizes hydrocarbon fuels to generate heat without a flame, significantly reducing harmful emissions while boosting energy efficiency. Our standout innovation is the integration of a resistive heating wire embedded directly within the catalyst. This design allows precise temperature control, rapid preheating, and enhanced reliability, eliminating the need for multiple catalytic elements. The result is a simplified, high-performing system that delivers consistent, clean heat.

How important do you think innovation is towards our goal of Net Zero?

Innovation is absolutely critical to achieving Net Zero. The path to a sustainable future requires ground-breaking advancements in technology, processes, and thinking that address the complex challenges of reducing greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining economic growth and energy security. Traditional methods simply cannot meet the demands of our evolving world, and innovation acts as the catalyst for transformative change. Beyond technology, innovation in policy, business models, and public engagement is equally essential. Collaborative efforts between governments, companies, and communities foster creative solutions and help scale sustainable practices globally.

What have been some of the challenges you have faced in the development stage?

The development stage of any innovative technology is never without its challenges, and our journey at X-Heat has been no exception. Some of the key hurdles we have faced include:

  • Technical Complexity:

    • Developing a cutting-edge catalytic heating system required extensive research and testing to ensure optimal performance, safety, and efficiency. Balancing these factors while adhering to stringent industry standards was a significant challenge.

  • Material Sourcing:

    • Our technology relies on precious metal catalysts, which not only need to be of the highest quality but must also be sourced sustainably. Ensuring a consistent and ethical supply chain presented both logistical and financial obstacles.

  • Regulatory Compliance:

    • Achieving British Standards Institute (BSI) approval was a milestone, but meeting regulatory requirements and global standards during the development phase required meticulous documentation, rigorous testing, and ongoing refinements.

  • Funding and Resources:

    • Like many innovators, we faced the challenge of securing sufficient funding to support our research, prototyping, and production efforts. Balancing resource allocation between development and commercial outreach was a delicate task.

  • Market Scepticism:

    • Introducing a disruptive technology in a traditional industry often comes with scepticism. Educating potential customers and stakeholders about the benefits of catalytic heating and its potential to transform the heating sector was an ongoing effort.

  • Scalability:

    • Transitioning from prototype to production at scale posed challenges in ensuring the consistency and quality of our systems while managing costs.

What has been the most rewarding part of this process?

The most rewarding part of this process has been witnessing the tangible impact of our innovation on the journey towards a more sustainable future. Knowing that our catalytic heating technology has the potential to transform an industry, reduce emissions, and contribute meaningfully to achieving net-zero goals has been incredibly fulfilling.

One of the standout moments was achieving British Standards Institute (BSI) approval, making X-Heat the first company in our sector to meet these rigorous standards. This milestone validated the hard work, dedication, and innovation our team has poured into this project. It reinforced the fact that our technology is not only ground-breaking but also trusted and recognized by leading regulatory bodies.

Equally rewarding has been the feedback from customers and industry stakeholders. Seeing businesses embrace our technology and report measurable benefits—whether through energy savings, reduced emissions, or operational efficiency—has been immensely gratifying. It confirms that our work is making a real difference in the day-to-day operations of our clients while aligning with their sustainability goals.

What does the future look like for X-Heat/Zebco?

Our focus moving forward is twofold: scaling our operations to meet increasing market demand and continuing to innovate to stay ahead of the curve. The global push for net-zero emissions creates a significant opportunity for our business, as companies and industries alike search for effective, environmentally friendly heating solutions. X-Heat is perfectly positioned to fill this gap and become a leader in sustainable heating technology.

We plan to expand into new markets, both domestically and internationally, and introduce new product lines that cater to evolving customer needs. By leveraging partnerships, collaborations, and feedback from early adopters, we will refine and enhance our offerings, ensuring we consistently deliver value to our clients.

At the heart of our strategy is a commitment to R&D. We aim to push the boundaries of what catalytic heating can achieve—whether through advancements in energy efficiency, further reductions in emissions, or breakthroughs in material sciences. Innovation will remain the cornerstone of our growth.

What would you say to anyone thinking about starting a business to create a new Net Zero Innovation?

Do not start unless you have an incredibly high threshold for pain, the challenges come thick and fast , make sure you surround yourself with good people who have expereince in the areas you do not. Finally, be passionate and purpose-driven. The journey to Net Zero is one of the most significant challenges of our time. By contributing to it, you’re not just building a business—you’re playing a vital role in creating a better, more sustainable future.
