For this Interview, we’ve are thrilled to get to chat to one of our new Designers, Lizzie Morrison!
Who are you?
I’m Lizzie and I’ve been on the team at E3D now for nearly six months. I graduated in July from the University of Nottingham with a first-class MEng in Product Design and Manufacture. My first few months have been a lot of fun and I’m excited to get involved with more projects and see more of the world of design and manufacture. Having moved to Newcastle from North Yorkshire in October, I’ve been loving spending time getting to know the city and meeting new people.
What inspires you to be a creative?
The inspiration for my creativity comes from my drive and determination to constantly improve and innovate. I always like to consider both the bigger picture and the finer details: from how the product’s environmental lifecycle and how it will benefit the user, all the way down to how a part can be moulded more efficiently.
What is ‘innovation’ for you?
For me, innovation means to continuously push boundaries to bring about change and improvement in our everyday lives. It’s an iterative cycle that can be daunting and challenging, but it can also be very exciting and rewarding. In my career so far, it’s been great being able to support clients with their innovations, as well as bring my own innovative ideas to their products.
What are the challenges in your current role?
As a junior designer in the early stages of my career, the main challenge I’ve found is how truly immersive the learning experience has been. As cringy as the phrase “every day is a school day” is, it definitely is at E3D. I’ve learnt so much from my colleagues so far and they all bring such a vast array of experience and wisdom to the team. I’ve really valued having the chance to learn from them and be constantly furthering my skills and knowledge.
What is the most rewarding part of your role and what you do?
So far, I’ve loved seeing the positive reactions from clients and then considering the how the end users will be affected- it’s a great feeling knowing that you’re making a difference to people’s lives for the better. I’ve also found my own personal growth and how far I’ve come in just six months to be very rewarding; seeing not just my skills as a designer come along, but also my confidence and my outlook on my work grow.
What are your ambitions?
Reflecting upon my first six months at E3D, I’ve realised just how much I value learning and growth. My ambitions are to remain on this development trajectory and ensure I’m constantly finding ways to advance my knowledge and hone my skillset as a designer and member of the team. I want to ensure I’m agile in my career by continuously adapting to new challenges and opportunities and be able to support clients and colleagues to the best of my ability.
